Welcome to the very first blog post of Roamin' Catholics: Body and Soul. A few years back, we made an unofficial habit (insert favorite nun joke here) of attending a Saturday evening mass and then going out to dinner afterwards. We often casually mentioned our outings in Facebook.
The new year prompted us to become more official. We decided to blog about our adventures. Yeah, we both grew up hearing that it was wrong to "church shop". Well, we're really not shopping. And so what if we are.. at least we're going to church. And that becomes the lead in to this week.
We are fans of the Saturday night mass or the early Sunday morning mass. The Saturday night mass lends itself to a dinner for two afterwards. The early Sunday morning mass lends itself to no singing in church. We're not fans of singing - unless it is the variety that we both grew up learning and singing. That's been pretty hard to find lately. So I've digressed.
We had friends over last night and that led to a late bedtime which led to sleeping in. The official plan was to go the the 10:30 am mass at St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood, MD. The problem (that we discovered when we pulled into the parking lot and did not see anyone else entering the church) was that St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood does NOT have a 10:30 mass. Oh dear. We learned that the mass that filled the lot (9:30) was still going on (at 10:24) and the next mass wasn't until 11:15.
Hmm... fifty minutes seemed like a long time to wait for the next mass and we were both hungry and in need of feeding our bodies. So we pulled out of the lot, held hands as Lou drove and said one Hail Mary, one Our Father and one Glory Be and made our way to Mosaic Cafe in Rockville. There would also have been an Act of Contrition, but one of us does not officially know the words.
If we had actually attended mass, we discussed previously that one of the things we would blog about would be what each of us "took away" from the mass.
On our way we discussed what our take-aways were. We came up with the following:
1. We need to plan better.
2. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Just a quick comment on the church with a small "c" - this is merely a comment about architecture, and not a critique on the Church with the big "C". The church reminded us of a gymnasium from the outside. I look at the building and feel as if I am going in to attend a basketball game, not a mass. I think we are both fans of the more traditional style church like both of us attended as children. St. Patrick Church in Erie, PA for me and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Hartford, CT for Lou.
Since we missed the food for our souls, we moved on to the food for our bodies. Mosaic Cafe was a first for both of us. The ambiance was trendy and inviting. I had the eggs benedict and Lou had the Mosaic breakfast.
We regret that we are not off to such a good start in the new year. We will plan better for next week, so please stick with us. This is going to be Catholic AND fun.
